Throughout the Tulip period, the water features became popular. Fountains were added and water canals, as well, became more popular. Recreational areas, such as picnic areas, were added. The tulip period was the start of Baroque-styled mosques, which consisted of "complex architectural plans, often based on the oval," and spaces that enhanced the "feeling of motion and sensuality" (Encyclopædia BritannicaOnline). Baroque style mosques also include drama, contrast, twisting elements, and many rich surface treatments. Painting and applying bright colors and images to the ceiling and walls. Westernization occured during this period.
